The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, has proudly announced that Professor Lionel Tarassenko has been appointed as a ‘non-political life peer’ in the House of Lords, the second chamber of the British parliament. This makes the professor the first person of Ukrainian descent to be accepted as a peer in the House. Professor Tarassenko has already gained the honor of receiving a CBE from the late Queen Elizabeth and has also has the distinction of FREng, FMedSci against his name, in an illustrious career.
Lionel Tarassenko gained his reputation as a leading global expert in the application of signal processing, artificial intelligence, and medical machine-learning.
In the United Kingdom, Professor Tarassenko is already known as the founder of Reuben College at the University of Oxford. In the early 1990s he was recognised as being one of the first to apply machine learning to solve real-world problems. For this scientific achievement he was given the honor of a British Computer Society Medal in 1996. Among his notable achievements was his work on jet engine health monitoring (in collaboration with Rolls-Royce) and patient treatment monitoring for the National Health Service (NHS) of Great Britain. In recognition of a distinguished career and contribution, he is a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Academy of Medical Sciences.
In his role at Reuben College, Professor Tarassenko started a special scholarship fund, available for displaced Ukrainian students with the ambition to study at Oxford. He personally arranged financial support for student places in several colleges of the university.
Lionel Tarassenko was born in Paris to a French mother and a Ukrainian father, who was a nuclear physicist. The family moved to Great Britain when Lionel was 13 years old.
