On the morning of March 6, Russia attacked Odesa during the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. A missile from the occupiers exploded just 500 meters away from the politicians, as reported by CNN.
“The group felt the impact of the strike and saw a “mushroom cloud” of smoke, according to a source familiar with the situation,” the text reads.
The Russians targeted the port infrastructure of Odesa. Five people died, according to a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Naval Forces. Zelenskyy and Mitsotakis were unharmed.
“These are military, civilian, international guests – to these people, it doesn’t matter. Either they’ve lost their minds, or they have no control over their terrorist army’s actions. We need to defend ourselves first and foremost. The best way to do that is with an air defense system,” said Zelenskyy.
The Greek Prime Minister responded that Zelenskyy showed him the destruction in Odesa caused by Russian strikes. Later, they heard air raid sirens.
“Shortly after, as we were getting into our cars, we heard a big explosion. I think that for us is the best, most vivid reminder that there is a real war going on here. Every day there is a war, which not only affects the front, the soldiers, it affects our innocent fellow citizens,” Mitsotakis stated.
However, ABC News sources claim it’s unlikely that Zelenskyy was the target; rather, the occupiers were likely launching missiles at their ‘usual’ targets.
