On Ukrainian Unity Day, UWC calls for continued solidarity with Ukraine

Today, on January 22, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukrainians and their global supporters to celebrate Unity Day – a keystone date in Ukraine’s history.

More than 100 years ago, under the looming presence of the Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires, the Ukrainian National Republic and the Western Ukrainian National Republic came together to declare the Act of Unification. This bold move merged the two republics into one unified, independent Ukrainian state.

This seminal declaration, made with reverence in Kyiv’s St. Sophia Square, epitomized the enduring Ukrainian dream of a free, sovereign, and united nation. It also marked a crucial milestone in Ukraine’s fight for independence, paving the way for the country’s rebirth in 1991.

“106 years ago, the Act of Unification united historic Ukrainian lands under national rule. Sadly, our independence was fleeting. Without substantial Western support, Ukraine fell to Soviet Russia, which exploited it as a conduit to Europe and expanded its oppressive influence,” said UWC President Paul Grod.

Today, once again, Ukraine’s brave men and women are in the trenches, facing off against a ruthless Russian aggressor. This battle is not just about the future of Ukraine, but also the safety and values of the free world. Moscow’s ambitions remain unchanged: to obliterate Ukrainian identity and manipulate Ukraine as a pawn in its quest to reclaim ‘global dominance.’

The consequences of this conflict extend far beyond Ukraine’s borders, posing a grave threat to democratic nations everywhere. Should Ukraine fall, Russia’s political domination over Europe will effectively be set, and war with Europe won’t even be required to establish Moscow’s new sphere of influence. The fight for Ukraine is, undeniably, a fight for freedom and justice across the globe.

“On Ukrainian Unity Day, we urge all allies to heed historical lessons and continue unwavering support for Ukraine. Putin’s neo-imperial dreams must not be underestimated. Any premature peace without solid security guarantees for Ukraine is a non-starter and a threat to democracy,” Grod asserted.

Democratic nations must unite to fortify Ukraine against Russia’s malign forces.

Strength in unity — together, we will prevail!
