Northern Europe pushes for Ukraine’s expedited EU membership

Six countries in northern Europe – Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia – are calling for Ukraine’s swift accession to the European Union, Politico reports, citing sources.

In a joint letter obtained by journalists, diplomats from the six countries urged Brussels to propose concrete measures to “decisively advance” Ukraine’s EU membership process.

That comes as European countries scramble to step up support to the country amid a worsening rift with U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration,” Politico writes.

Ukraine became an EU member candidate country in June 2022.

The six countries are pressing Brussels to quickly develop a clear roadmap for Ukraine’s EU integration.

Reaffirming full and unequivocal commitment to the EU membership perspective of Ukraine, we call for accelerating the accession process,” the letter reads. “The time has come for ambitious and effective decisions in this regard.”

The allies have resorted to pressure due to concerns that Hungary might attempt to block Ukraine’s path to the EU. All EU member states must unanimously agree to accept a new member.

Ukraine has shown remarkable reform progress – now it is time for us to mobilize the efforts to help Ukraine make this happen,” the letter reads.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, whose term ends in November, suggested that Kyiv could join the EU by 2030.

Last November, Ukrainian World Congress President Paul Grod made an official visit to the Nordic countries, aimed to strengthen support for Ukraine, address the pressing issues of Ukrainian refugees, and highlight important humanitarian and historical concerns.
