The restrictions on strikes on Russian territory, set by the Pentagon for Ukraine since the beginning of the supply of American weapons, are completely unjustified and have knowingly placed the Ukrainian side at a disadvantage, said Marta Farion, UWC Vice President for North America and Vice President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA).
“While Russia can do absolutely anything in Ukraine, Ukraine operates within the ‘red lines’ established by the United States and cannot effectively contain Russian forces concentrated in the Russian regions neighboring Ukraine,” says Farion.
With such restrictions, Ukraine will not only fail to win the war but will also be unable to effectively defend the territory it currently controls, adds the UWC Vice President. “For our part, we are closely monitoring this discussion in the United States and regularly urge American voters to contact their elected representatives to request maximum support for Ukraine.”
Currently, there is an intense debate in both the US Congress and the US government regarding the use of American weapons for strikes on Russian territory, adds Farion.
These days, the US Senate has once again called for allowing Ukraine to strike targets on Russian territory as part of its defense. American Senator James Risch (R-ID) put forward this proposal. “Ukraine must be allowed to defend itself, period. If that means striking a Russian bomber launching missiles at Ukrainian civilians from Russian airspace, then Ukraine should be able to take that shot,” emphasizes Risch.
A similar appeal from both parties to US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was made public in the US House Intelligence Committee on May 21.
