Majority of Trump supporters back Ukraine, poll finds

Sixty-nine percent of Republican voters who support U.S. President Donald Trump consider Russia an aggressor, while 83 percent do not support Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin, according to a survey by the Razom for Ukraine non-profit organization, reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

Contrary to stereotypes, Republican voters have nuanced views about America’s place in the world and Russia’s war. Their opinions on Ukraine are considered, internally coherent and broadly well-informed,” the report states.

This electoral group is unlikely to support American politicians who strengthen Putin’s position, WSJ notes.

As a result, Trump’s rhetoric could cause issues within his own administration.

WSJ also emphasized that the White House’s stance on Ukraine not only contradicts the general sentiment in the U.S., but also the views of Trump’s voter base of Republicans.

Furthermore, the majority of respondents (60 percent) support continuing military aid under certain conditions. When it comes to Zelenskyy, opinions were divided: 43 percent viewed him positively, while 45 percent had a negative view.

Trump remains very popular among Republicans, with 83 percent holding a positive opinion of him.

The majority identify as “Trump Republicans” (53 percent), rather than part of the traditional Republican Party (38 percent).

In contrast, views on Putin are just as negative as views on Trump are positive – 83 percent of Republicans hold an unfavorable view of the Kremlin ruler.

Like other Americans, they aren’t immersed in the byzantine provisions of military-assistance programs, and they are concerned about how Washington spends their tax dollars. But they clearly see Ukraine having been grievously wronged. Their feelings of solidarity are motivated by patriotism, not politics,” the report said.
