Kakhovka HPP collapse: Ukraine is building main water pipeline

In Ukraine, the construction of a 150-kilometer main water pipeline has begun. The system will cover four oblasts affected after the Russians blew up the Kakhovka HPP. Currently, preparatory work is underway, the Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine, Oleksandr Kubrakov, said.

“The water line will be laid from scratch; international partners are involved in procuring and logistics pipes of the required diameter and high-capacity pumps. We are setting ourselves an ambitious task – to complete the work as soon as possible,” the minister said.

The project includes constructing three sections of the main water pipeline for almost 150 kilometers. The minister added that this would provide water to at least one million residents of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, and Kherson Oblasts.

The Reconstruction Agency is responsible for the implementation of the project. The government has allocated UAH 1.5 billion (USD 42 million) for the works from the Fund for Dealing with the Aftermath of Russia’s Armed Aggression.

After the Russians detonated the Kakhovka HPP, water supply problems arose in several oblasts. In Nikopol, the system works at 30%; in Kryvyi Rih, water is served hourly, and in the Kherson Oblast, people are given bottled water. The authorities are working to minimize the consequences of the disaster.
