Israel warns France of potential terrorist attack during Olympics

Israel has warned France about a possible terrorist attack during the Olympic Games, according to French media citing a letter from Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz to Stéphane Séjourné, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France.

Katz warned Séjourné of the potential threat of terrorist attacks against Israeli athletes and tourists from “Iranian terrorist groups and other terrorist organizations.” “Some seek to harm the celebration of this joyous event,” the letter reads.

Previously, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin reported that about a thousand people have been banned from attending the Paris Olympics. They are suspected of possible interference in the interests of a foreign state.

Recently, French intelligence services in Paris also detained a Russian national on suspicion of planning to destabilize the political situation during the Olympic Games.

Volodymyr Kogutyak, UWC Vice President for Western Europe, said that in light of potential threats, French law enforcement agencies have implemented unprecedented security measures in Paris.

“The last Olympic Games in France took place exactly 100 years ago, in 1924. The challenges then were not as extensive as today, when about 12 million people are expected in the French capital over a short period. Among the numerous risks are over 6 billion expected cyberattacks, as well as a recently caught FSB agent who planned a major provocation on the opening day of the Games. There is also the threat of terrorist attacks. That is why France has been preparing for this summer long and thoroughly. In addition to 80,000 French police officers patrolling Paris, officers from 40 countries around the world are also assisting. We believe that these Games will be unforgettable in a positive way and, most importantly, safe,” Kogutyak said.
