“Unity is nation’s strength”: international Independence Day project to be held in Kyiv

An international project will be held in Kyiv for the Independence Day of Ukraine, where dozens of embroidered Ukrainian “rushnyks” [Ukrainian towels] from different parts of the world will be displayed.

“The embroidered shirt and ryshnyks symbolize national consciousness, freedom, and struggle. Ukrainians worldwide will unite in one idea and show that they have their own self-identification and national code,” the event organizers say.

The project’s initiators are the Kyiv City Center of Folk Art and Cultural Studies of the Department of Culture of the Kyiv City Council and the Mist-Il Ponte (Italy) cultural and educational association Lesia Vorobets-Utrysko. The organizers call on representatives of Ukrainian communities from all over the world to join the event.

To participate in the project, Ukrainian societies, public organizations, associations, administrations, and cultural centers located abroad will prepare one embroidered rushnyk and send it to the project organizers in Ukraine, in Kyiv or bring it with them to the event.

“The ornament is chosen at the request of the project participant, the length of the towel with the ends (frenseles) is 2.5 meters, the ends (frenseles) themselves are 12-15 cm, the name of the country represented by the project participant must be embroidered in the middle of the towel,| the organizers explain.

On the verge of Ukraine’s Independence Day, an event will be held in Kyiv where project participants will present their embroidered towel and, as a national heritage, hand it over to one of the museums of the Ukrainian capital for safekeeping.

“Considering the situation in Ukraine, the event venue will be announced later. Participants who will not be able to come to Ukraine and be present at the event should send video recordings with a welcome speech (up to 1 minute) to the e-mail address of the festival competition,” the organizers add.

A catalog of submissions will be created, including all project participants and their embroidered rushnyks.
