India is one of biggest suppliers of sanctioned critical technologies such as, microchips, circuits, and machinery – to Russia, trailing only China, Bloomberg reports, citing data from U.S. and European officials.
Exports of sanctioned goods from India to Russia exceeded $60 million in April-May 2024, nearly double the amount in previous months.
By July, exports surged to $95 million, making India the second-largest supplier after China, according to Bloomberg’s data.
“The most recent data means almost a fifth of the sensitive technology that goes into Russia’s military-industrial complex got there via India,” the officials said.
Indian authorities have largely remained unresponsive to inquiries regarding this issue. Due to its role as a transit country for sanctioned goods heading to Russia, EU and U.S. officials have visited New Delhi repeatedly in recent months.
“The fresh data underscores the difficulty the US and its allies have faced in crimping Russia’s ability to fight in Ukraine two and a half years since Putin’s forces invaded,” Bloomberg reported.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kyiv on Aug. 23 and on July 8, he made Moscow the destination of his foreign trip after being re-elected.
