IN MEMORIAM: MYKHAILO HORYN
(1930-2013)
The Ukrainian World Congress expresses deep sorrow with the passing on January 13, 2013, of a dedicated son of the Ukrainian nation, renowned Ukrainian dissident, human rights defender and community-political activist – Mykhailo Horyn.
Mykhailo Horyn’s life is a model for dedicated service to the Ukrainian people and exemplifies the struggle for Ukraine’s independence and development as a democratic, lawful state. Ukrainians around the world remember Mykhailo Horyn as an active member of the intellectuals of the 1960s commonly referred to as shistdesiatnyky and the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, a prisoner of Soviet concentration camps, a leader of Narodnyi Rukh Ukrayiny (People’s Movement of Ukraine), a Member of Parliament and President of the Ukrainian World Coordinating Council.
For his achievements in service to the Ukrainian nation and Ukraine, Mykhailo Horyn was awarded with state honors, most notably the “Order for Merits” II Rank and the Order of Prince Yaroslav Mudryi V Rank.
With this difficult loss, the Ukrainian World Congress expresses sincerest condolences to the late Mykhailo Horyn’s wife, family and friends, and to all who knew and loved him.
