The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) expresses deep sorrow and condolences on the passing on 3 January 2017 in Toronto, Canada, of former UWC Secretary General Yaroslav Sokolyk.
The death of Yaroslav Sokolyk is a painful loss for his wife Oksana, sons Vsevolod and Ihor, daughter‑in‑law Deborah, and three grandchildren, Andriy, Danylo and Katrusia, and for the UWC and the entire global Ukrainian community that remembers Yaroslav Sokolyk as a prominent community activist, foremost as the Secretary General of the UWC from 1993-1998, Chair of the UWC Media and Public Relations Committee from 1983-1988, and member of the UWC Audit Committee from 1998‑2008.
During that time, the name of Yaroslav Sokolyk was well known in Canada where he lived since 1948 and actively worked in various spheres of Ukrainian religious, community and professional life, specifically holding the positions of President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Toronto Branch,President of the Brotherhood of Ukrainian Catholics in Canada, Eastern Eparchy, President of the Ukrainian Youth Association Plast, Toronto Branch, and President of the Society of Ukrainian Engineers of Ontario.
For his dedicated work for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people Yaroslav Sokolyk was awarded the highest honour of the UWC – the Medal of St. Volodymyr the Great, the Order of Merit of Ukraine III Degree, and other medals from both Ukraine and the diaspora.
The UWC leadership and membership share the deep pain of this loss and pray for the repose of his soul.
