The International Educational Coordinating Council (IECC) is continuing to support educational reform in Ukraine within the declared State Policy of the New Ukrainian School (NUS).

During July 2020, members of the Institute for the Professional Development of Teachers (IPDT-IECC), all of whom are professional educators in the Diaspora and Ukraine, will begin the process of organizing the Summer Institute materials accumulated over the course of the past 2 years. The next step will be the creation of educational resources.

“Previously, we had wanted to conduct this year’s Summer Institute as usual. But, unfortunately, because of the global pandemic, we had to change our plans. And, when our Ukrainian colleagues approached us with the idea of working together to create educational teacher professional development materials, we decided to support this,” said Nadia Luciw, MA, IECC Head (1998-2008) and Director of IPDT-IECC.

Once completed, the materials developed by the Canada – Ukraine teams will serve as a practical resource for educators. Dr. Oksana A. Wynnyckyj-Yusypovych, IECC Head (2008-2018) will be coordinating this work.

“During the global pandemic, we really need the support of our Canadian colleagues. Together we are planning to develop a professional resource this summer that will incorporate both online and face-to-face learning,” said Kateryna Horokhovska, Member of IPDT and Summer Institute coordinator in Ukraine.

Additional information: The Institute for the Professional Development of Teachers (IPDT) was established within the IECC in 1992, with the aim of disseminating educational best-practices among educators in Ukraine. In 1993-2007, 14 Summer Institutes were held during which Diaspora educators shared their understanding of contemporary teaching-learning methods based on world-wide teaching-learning research. Such cooperation resulted in the preparation and publication of Ukrainian-language professional development textbooks for school principals, history teachers, grade 1-4 teachers and kindergarten teachers.

In 2018, with the support of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine and the City of Lviv, the IECC renewed its Summer Institutes. In 2019, a Summer Institute was held in the cities of Lviv, Lviv Oblast and Mukachevo, Zakarpattia Oblast. The support of Zoryana Dovhanyk, Head of the City of Lviv Department of Education and Lesya Prystavska, Head of the City of Lviv Educational and Methodological Centre, was instrumental in the successful administration of the Summer Institutes.
