Holodomor commemoration events: find one in your country

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) is launching a global advocacy campaign titled “Remembering the Holodomor – the genocide of Ukrainians continues,” to commemorate the genocidal tragedy of 1932-1933, observed this year on Nov. 23.

Ukrainian communities around the world are gearing up to honor the anniversary with a variety of events that include memorial services, exhibitions, film screenings, lectures, and other commemorative activities.

Australia

The Malvy Literary Club Australia is hosting a special literary event to mark the anniversary of the 1932-1933 Holodomor genocide. The event will take place online on Nov. 17 at 10 a.m.  Kyiv time. You can join via the provided link.

The Ukrainian community of Sydney is organizing a commemorative event for the anniversary on Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. local time. The event will take place at Centennial Park. More details can be found here.

A memorial service for the innocent victims of the Holodomor will be held at the Ukrainian Orthodox Parish of St Aphanasius in Granville, a suburb of Sydney, on Nov. 17, following a divine liturgy. The bilingual service will begin at 9:30 a.m. local time.

USA

The Illinois division of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) will commemorate the anniversary of the Holodomor on Nov. 24 with a memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony at the Holodomor victims monument that is attached to the St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church in a Chicago suburb. On Nov. 17, the Ukrainian Student Society in Philadelphia will hold a commemoration for the victims of the Holodomor from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. local time at the Eisenhower Chapel in the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center.

During that time, we are planning to have a Ukrainian-held Catholic Mass hosted by a Ukrainian priest. Then, if time remains, we are planning to have some traditional and commemorative songs and poems to honor the millions of Ukrainian lives lost during the Holodomor Genocide. Finally, we are planning a peaceful march to honor and raise awareness for 1000 Days since the Full-Scale Invasion,” the organizers wrote.

The Ukrainian Cultural Center in Las Vegas will hold a Memorial Day event. “We’ll gather to honor the victims of genocide with a moment of silence and watch a movie in English,” the organizers wrote. The event will take place on Nov. 23 from noon to 3 p.m. local time. Details are available via the link.

The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) urges people to light a candle on Nov. 23 in memory of the millions of victims of the Holodomor. 

Share your photo of a lit candle online to raise awareness and to support advocacy for recognising Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainian people,” the organizers wrote.

Canada

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) invites you to a commemoration ceremony on Nov.23 at 3 p.m. local time. The event will take place at the Holodomor Memorial located at 100 Princes’ Blvd, Exhibition Place, Toronto.

“Let us gather as a community to honor and remember this tragic chapter of Ukrainian history,” wrote the organizers.

The Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC) of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta is organizing an exhibition dedicated to the Holodomor genocide. The exhibition will be open on Nov. 20-27. Details can be found at this link.

The London branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress invites the Ukrainian community to commemorate the anniversary of the Holodomor genocide on Nov. 24. The event will take place at 1 p.m. local time at the London Ukrainian Centre in the Odesa hall. Details can be found at this link.

Great Britain

The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) has launched a global awareness campaign to honor the victims of the 1932-1933 Holodomor.

The AUGB Glasgow invites you to a video tour of the Holodomor Museum – a unique opportunity to learn more about the history of the genocidal tragedy from anywhere in the world. Details can be found at this link.

A Day of Remembrance will be held in Hastings on Nov. 16. The organizers have planned a lecture and a film screening. Details can be found at this link.

The Young Ukrainians Hub in Canterbury will honor the memory of the victims of the Holodomor on Nov. 16. You can register for the event at this link.

Italy

Events will take place in dozens of cities across Italy, including Modena, Ravenna, San Donà di Piave, Turin, Udine, Trieste, Rovigo, Florence, Bologna, Gallarate, Padua, Ancona, and Reggio Emilia. Details are available via this link.

In Reggio Emilia, Ukrainians will hold a memorial march on Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. local time. A film screening is scheduled for Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m.Details are available via this link.

“It is important that we talk about this, especially considering that very few people in Italy know about the Holodomor. Few know that the number of victims was in the millions and that this was not a political mistake but a genocide,” the organizers wrote.

In Bologna, on Nov. 17, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time, an exhibition on the Holodomor in Ukraine will be held.

A conference will be held in Rimini on Nov. 23. “Millions of lives were cut short by the hunger that the Soviet state imposed on the Ukrainian people. During the conference, we will discuss this, hoping that such horrific events will never be repeated,” the organizers wrote.

Finland

In Helsinki, the Ukrainian community will hold a candle-lighting ceremony at the Monument to Past Generations and Those Buried Far Away. Following this, an ecumenical prayer service will take place at St. Henry’s Cathedral. Details are available via this link.

Denmark

On Nov. 17, UWC President Paul Grod will join a peace march in Copenhagen to mark 1,000 days since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, as announced by the Association of Ukrainians in Denmark.

The Danish organization also invites Ukrainian families to participate in a “meaningful workshop that will introduce children to the history of the Holodomor in an age-appropriate way through creative activities.” Details are available via this link.
