Valentina Kuryliw’s latest book on human rights and the Holodomor now available on the UWC website of Remembrance to encourage the teaching of the Holodomor worldwide during November Remembrance Month.
Valentina Kuryliw, Director of Education for the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC), has published an innovative course book titled The Historian’s Craft Lesson on Human Rights and the Holodomor.
The book offers innovative methods for teaching high school students about the Holodomor and human rights, using a variety of historical sources and interactive tasks.
In the book, students take on the role of “young detectives,” investigating, analyzing, and synthesizing the information provided during the lesson. This approach promotes student engagement in the learning process, develops critical and historical thinking skills, helps express thoughts and ideas clearly, and encourages further exploration of the topic.
In this lesson plan, teachers become facilitators in dialogue with students to help them arrive at their own conclusions, according to Kuryliw’s description.
The book has been officially recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine as a teaching resource for schools and for teacher training purposes throughout Ukraine.
This free global download (in PDF) of the book is made possible through the support of the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (University of Alberta). For more information about the book and all 3 downloads, please visit the HREC ED website.
The book can be downloaded for free in both Ukrainian and English until the end of November, along with a Powerpoint in English.
