The Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC) of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the University of Alberta co-organized the Global Perspectives on Heritage of Hunger conference, which took place in Toronto from April 3rd to 5th.
The conference aimed to expand understanding of famines and explore famine teaching, heritage, and commemoration practices. HREC advisor Andrea Graziosi was among the event’s experts.
Event attendees not only attended lectures but also engaged with presentations by up-and-coming Canadian scholars on the Holodomor, paid visits to memorials honoring the victims of the famine, and viewed the documentary “Seeds of Hunger,” which chronicles Welsh journalist Gareth Jones’ endeavors to expose the Holodomor in Ukraine.
As is customary in April, Canada hosts various remembrance and educational activities focused on the man-made famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, with events taking place in educational institutions across the country.
