Holodomor anniversary: 55 UN member states sign declaration

Over 50 UN member states and the European Union delegation signed the Ukraine-initiated Declaration on the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-1933, the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN reported.

Ukraine offered UN members the opportunity to sign the Declaration on the occasion of the anniversary of the Holodomor to demonstrate international solidarity, honor the memory of those killed by hunger, and recognize the relevance of the lessons of the past.

The Ukrainian World Congress also expresses its gratitude to the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN and the global Ukrainian community for the advocacy work and efforts that brought the adoption of this document closer.

In turn, the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, welcomed the signing of the Declaration.

It is important that the Holodomor is gaining increased attention at the UN, and the number of signatures has increased dramatically since the previous such document in 2018. Ukrainian diplomacy will continue to work to restore historical justice and honor the victims of the Holodomor,” Kuleba wrote.

The document was signed by the delegations of Albania, Andorra, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Marshall Islands, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Palau, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Moldova, Republic of Korea, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Uruguay and the European Union, Andriy Dobriansky, Chair of the UWC Committee on Relations with the United Nations, reported.

UWC thanks Ukraine’s partners for their systematic and unwavering support – in particular, to the societies and governments of countries that recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of Ukrainians. At the same time, the UWC calls on other countries to join the initiative to establish justice.
