Historic first: Ukraine becomes UNESCO World Heritage Committee member

Ukraine was granted membership to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. The decision was reached during the 24th session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on November 22, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy (MCIP) reported.

“This is a historic event for Ukraine and an important step in the development and protection of the cultural and natural heritage of Ukraine. We thank the countries participating in the Convention for the expressed solidarity decision in support of Ukraine. Now more than ever, it is important to unite to protect our cultural heritage,” said the Acting Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, Rostyslav Karandieiev.

The election of Ukraine to the World Heritage Committee opens up new opportunities for active participation in the implementation of the Convention. In particular, the MCIP explained how to make decisions regarding using the World Heritage Fund and including objects in the List of World Heritage and the List of World Heritage in Danger.

Until now, Ukraine has never been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Last year, in July, Ukraine presented its candidacy for the elections to the World Heritage Committee for 2023-2027.

Having ratified the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1988, Ukraine plays a pivotal role in safeguarding its cultural and natural heritage. The country actively engages in preserving its treasures by utilizing its resources and leveraging international assistance and cooperation in financial, artistic, scientific, and technical realms. This commitment underscores Ukraine’s dedication to promoting its rich heritage on a global scale, as outlined by the ministry.
