German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on China to increase its influence on Russia regarding the war in Ukraine. The German political leader made this statement during a briefing with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
“I once again called on the Chinese government to more powerfully use its influence on Russia in the matter of war… Russia must withdraw its troops – otherwise, a good peace cannot be ensured,” Scholz said.
China is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, so it also bears responsibility. Beijing should refrain from supplying Russia with weapons to prevent the war from developing into a frozen conflict, Scholz emphasized.
“Peace cannot and should not be [restored] without considering the rights of Ukraine, which are enshrined by the UN – in particular, the right to sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Chancellor of Germany noted.
Earlier, China promised not to send weapons to Russia for the war in Ukraine, stated the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken after talks with the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping.
