The first vessel chartered by the United Nations World Food Program left the port “Pivdenny” in Odesa Region, bound for Ethiopia on Sunday, according to the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration Maksym Marchenko in a video message.
“Today, together with the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine, I visited the Port ‘Pivdenny’, where the first ship chartered by the UN World Food Program left the grain terminal and went to Ethiopia. This is the first, but very big step of many that we will need to take to overcome the global food crisis,” Mr Marchenko said.
Ethiopia is one of the countries that the UN assesses at risk of famine.
Since the beginning of the implementation of the “grain initiative”, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, as of August 13, a total of 16 ships with agricultural products departed Ukrainian ports.
