Factory explosion near Moscow – Ukraine’s drones or “human factor”?

A powerful explosion occurred in Moscow Oblast. Denotation rocked the Zagorsk Optical-Mechanical Plant in Sergiyev Posad on the morning of August 9, Russian media reported. A mushroom-shaped cloud of smoke rose over the city, and several residential buildings had broken windows.

Radio Liberty writes that the Zagorsk Optical-Mechanical Plant produces products for military purposes, particularly night sights for tanks. The distance from Sergiyev Posad to Moscow is 70 km.

According to preliminary reports, the plant was hit by a drone, the Russian news Telegram channel 112 reported. However, later the local authorities began to refute the version about the drone and called the cause of the explosion a “violation of the technological process” and a “human factor.”

Russian media reports that the pyrotechnic storage point, located on the plant’s territory, exploded. About 20 people were injured as a result of the incident, according to the local authorities of the Russian Federation.

In recent months, the Moscow region and Moscow have been repeatedly attacked by drones. In May, UAVs targeted the dome of the Senate Palace in the Kremlin. In July, they hit the alleged headquarters of a Russian intelligence hacker group. At the end of July, explosions also rocked the territory of the Moscow-City business center. On the night of August 10, drones were spotted near the Russian airports Vnukovo (Moscow) and Domodedovo (Moscow Oblast) – more than 10 flights were delayed due to security measures.

“The war is gradually returning to the territory of Russia – to its symbolic centers and military bases, and this is an inevitable, natural, and absolutely fair process,” President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a traditional address on July 30.
