Estonian president: West must tear down ‘wall of restrictions’ for Ukraine

The West must tear down the “wall of restrictions” it has created for Ukraine, Estonian President Alar Karis stated in his column for Politico, regarding Kyiv’s inability to strike legitimate military targets within Russia.

Any bans for Ukraine’s Armed Forces only “reflect our fear, weakness and indecision,” he said.

Karis expressed regret that there are, unfortunately, restrictive lines that Western countries assume to be Russia’s red lines.

And by making such assumptions about Russia’s intentions, we’ve now built a wall of our own. We’ve drawn a line with the belief that crossing it would mean escalation,” he wrote.

The fear is unjustified, Karis says. He recalled the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, which signified the end of the Cold War.

However, our hopes for lasting peace, and our belief in the impossibility of war in Europe, have come crashing down,” he stated.

The restrictions on Ukraine are “unfair, immoral and harmful,” and they “all feed the aggressor, emboldening it, increasing its appetite.”

Karis continued: “We have to make Russia understand that no country can ever impose its will on its neighbors through war. And this means that Russia cannot win this war.”

In September, the Ukrainian World Congress urgently appealed to the U.S. and all of Ukraine’s allies, strongly urging them to lift all established restrictions on strikes against military targets deep within Russian territory and to provide the requisite long-range missile systems.
