The European Congress of Ukrainians (ECU), in cooperation with the Ukrainian-Hellenic Thought society, is urging the Greek government to investigate the attack on the Ukrainian Holodomor commemoration event that was held on Nov. 23.
“This solemn event, dedicated to honoring the memory of millions of victims of the Great Artificial Famine, was disrupted by provocative and violent actions by individuals affiliated with the Communist Party of Greece,” states the ECU’s appeal to the government.
These actions, including a physical attack on a Ukrainian diplomat and the intimidation of women and children, stand in stark contrast to Greece’s democratic values and raise justified concerns about the safety and freedom of Ukrainian communities, the group said in a statement.
“Ukrainian communities in Greece, as active members of the European Congress of Ukrainians, consistently contribute to strengthening bilateral relations between Greece and Ukraine, as well as supporting the integration of Ukrainian refugees,” the appeal continues “However, such incidents undermine our efforts to foster cooperation and mutual respect.”
The ECU is calling on the Greek government to carry out a thorough investigation, hold those responsible accountable, increase security measures to protect memorial events, and officially recognize the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.
“Greece, as a country that has welcomed tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees and traditionally upholds democratic values and human rights, has the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the pursuit of historical truth and the prevention of future tragedies,” the ECU concludes.
