Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said her country might bar Russian athletes from entering its territory if they are allowed to compete by the International Olympic Committee, NTV reported on Monday.
“Countries in which major sporting events take place are not powerless. They can control whether Russians can actually take part by issuing visas,” Faeser told journalists.
“If we organize international competitions in Germany, then we can act accordingly. We will always act with a clear stance here,” the minister said.
According to Faeser, opening up international competitions to athletes from Russia would be “a slap in the face to Ukrainian athletes.”
“Offering the warmonger Putin a propaganda stage would betray all the values of sport,” she added.
