Today the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) joins Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine worldwide in commemorating Ukraine’s Constitution Day.
The adoption of the fundamental law of Ukraine on June 28, 1996, was a landmark event in Ukraine’s modern history. It became possible following a nearly 300-year-long struggle for Ukrainian statehood. We are proud of the contributions of diaspora Ukrainians, who joined the efforts to draft Ukraine’s Constitution.
The Constitution defines Ukraine as a sovereign, independent, democratic, social law-based state. Ukrainian main law established the state status of the Ukrainian language and the irreversibility of the European and Euro-Atlantic trajectory for Ukraine. Finally, the Constitution serves as a foundation for the nation’s democratic pro-Western course and values and enabled the establishment of Ukrainian civil society.
Today, thousands of brave men and women of Ukraine are defending their country from Russia’s unprovoked brutal genocidal military invasion and struggling for the core democratic values enshrined in the Ukrainian Constitution.
On this day, we once again call on the democratic international community to provide Ukraine with maximum military and economic support as it launches the counteroffensive to liberate all of its lands from the deadly Russian occupation. We also call on the NATO Allies to officially invite Ukraine to join NATO at the Vilnius summit and launch the formal accession process.
Ukrainians deserve a better future in the European family of nations. A democratic, independent Ukraine will strengthen global security and the rules-based international order.
