On this day of mourning, the Ukrainian World Congress sent a letter of condolences to the Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk, stating that:
The Ukrainian World Congress wishes to express its sincere condolences to the Polish government and people on the tragic death of Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski, the First Lady Mrs. Maria Kaczynski and the Presidential delegation on their way to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn mass murder in which thousands of Polish prisoners of war, primarily military officers, were executed by the Soviet NKVD.
President Kaczynski was well-known and respected for his active involvement in the fight to overthrow communist rule in Poland, particularly in the Solidarity movement.
On this day of mourning, our thoughts and prayers go to the Polish people around the world on their sudden and horrible loss.
The Ukrainian World Congress is an international coordinating body for Ukrainian communities in the diaspora representing the interests of over 20 million Ukrainians with member organizations in over 30 countries, including the Association of Ukrainians in Poland.
The Ukrainian World Congress also extends its heartfelt sympathies to the Ukrainian community in Poland on this sad day.
