Chicago Ukrainian community announces “Ukraine Month”

The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), Illinois Division, has announced “Ukraine Month” from August 1 to August 31 in Chicago. This initiative is dedicated to Ukraine’s Independence Day, celebrated on August 24.

“Every August Saturday and Sunday will feature Ukrainian cultural festivals, every day will include good deeds for Ukraine, every hour will be focused on Victory over the Muscovites, and every minute will be a thank you to our defenders!” wrote Maria Klimchak, representative of the Ukrainian community in the United States, Program Director at Kyiv Mohyla Foundation of America.

Ukraine Month will kick off with a ceremonial raising of the blue and yellow flag at the main square in Chicago. The ceremony is scheduled for 12:00 local time at the Richard J. Daley Center. “Join us to witness and support the raising of the Ukrainian flag, to commemorate Ukraine’s 33 years of independence and honor all the men and women who are courageously fighting for Ukraine’s sovereignty and freedom. Mayor of Chicago is expected to attend and deliver his remarks,” the organizers wrote.

The Ukrainian community in Chicago will celebrate the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence with a living chain along the city’s streets. “We are so many that we can stretch the chain all the way to the lake from the Ukrainian Village! So, mark this day in your calendar! At 4 PM, a ceremonial program will begin at the Ukrainian Cultural Center with participation from American political leaders and community representatives. After the concert, we will form columns and create a living chain, involving Americans!” Klimchak wrote.

“Let us be worthy sons and daughters of Ukraine. Every organization, parish, and every person who lives with the thought of victory — let us come together on this day!” Klimchak concluded.
