Carol of the Ecocide: the famous carol melody used to draw the world’ attention to Russian eco-crimes in Ukraine

Within the #StopEcocideUkraine campaign, Tina Karol, a Ukrainian pop star, and UAnimals, an animals rights movement, have presented a new version of the world-renowned Carol of the Bells by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych.

“Carol of the Ecocide draws attention to the fact that Russia is not only a terrorist country, but also an ecoterrorist that steals the future from our children and the entire planet. And this is not a cute cartoon Grinch, but an absolute evil that needs to be stopped before it stops the world,” says UAnimals founder Oleksandr Todorchuk.

“The war destroys life in the full sense of the word: it takes people’s lives, their homes and ways of life, their land, their hopes and the right to be happy. The war mercilessly destroys the Ukrainian environment and the world of animals. I joined the UAnimals initiative to remind the world how devastating and immeasurable the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine are. The song “Schedryk” [Carol of the Bells] is a symbol of the Christmas miracle, and Ukraine is a symbol of the human miracle of stability and indomitability, a miracle that throughout the war defends the world,” says Tina Karol.

UAnimals calls on the European Parliament, the United Nations, the parliaments of partner states and international organizations and institutions to condemn Russia’s actions, help stop environmental crimes, impose additional sanctions on Russia, help restore the ecological security of Ukraine and its environment and help in the renewal of the Ukrainian ecosystem during the war and in the post-war period, including by using the reparations tool.
