Ottawa wants to be involved in developing and providing security guarantees for Ukraine after the Russo-Ukrainian war ends, stated Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, according to the National Post.
The war in Ukraine cannot end under terms that would allow Russia to further destabilize Europe, the minister said, adding that Canada is committed to helping secure lasting peace.
“We want to be part of these conversations regarding security guarantees,” Joly said.
Ottawa is also urging the U.S. to include Ukraine in peace talks, after Washington suggested that Kyiv may have to cede territory and would not be able to join NATO.
“We want to be part of conversations linked to more Canadians being involved in protecting Ukraine,” she said.
At present, the new U.S. presidential administration is ruling out Ukraine’s NATO membership from the framework of future security guarantees.
However, Washington is open to allowing foreign troops, other than American forces, to be stationed in Ukraine.
