Buenos Aires city resolution expresses solidarity with Ukraine

A recent declaration adopted by the city legislature in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires expresses sympathy and solidarity with Ukraine.

It was officially approved in mid-November as a resolution and published on Dec. 2 to show unity with Ukraine when the 1000th-day milestone was reached of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The announcement was made on social media by Jorge Danylyshyn, UWC Regional Vice President for South America and President of the Prosvita Ukrainian Cultural Society.

As a city committed to human rights and peace, Buenos Aires cannot “remain indifferent to the suffering of those who have become victims of violence and have been forced to flee their homes,” the resolution states.

“[Russia’s full-scale] invasion of Ukraine has once again revealed the fragility of peace worldwide and the importance of international solidarity in the face of aggression that violates the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the document says.

The war in Ukraine has not only created a security crisis but also had a profound negative impact on the values of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect that should govern relations between nations, according to local authorities.

Commemorating 1000 days since the start of Russia’s all-out war against Ukraine is not just a gesture of solidarity but an opportunity for the international community to reaffirm its commitment to protecting human rights and the dignity of nations, the text emphasizes.

“Buenos Aires, staying true to the universal values of freedom, justice, and mutual respect, has the potential to raise awareness and mobilize citizens, sending a message of hope, brotherhood, and condemnation of all forms of violence that threaten the sovereignty of nations and the well-being of their people,” the resolution concludes.

On Dec. 4, Buenos Aires held a ceremony unveiling a memorial plaque to mark the 100th anniversary of the Prosvita Ukrainian Cultural Society.
