The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) joins the international community in marking Black Ribbon Day – the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Communism and Nazism in Europe commemorated annually on August 23, and honouring the memory of the innocent victims of two tyrannical regimes.
Black Ribbon Day coincides with the signing of the infamous Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between Nazi Germany and the Communist Soviet Union with which Europe was divided between Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Soviet Union. The two totalitarian regimes jointly invaded and dismembered Poland resulting in the start of World War II.
“This year marks the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact which led to a reign of terror in Europe during which millions of men, women and children suffered horribly at the hands of two brutal dictators,” stated UWC President Paul Grod. “On Black Ribbon Day we call upon the international community to heed the lessons of history. The current aggression against Ukraine by the Russian Federation is testimony to the fact that history can repeat itself and we must prevent, at all cost, the resurrection of Stalin’s legacy and Vladimir Putin’s attempt to forcibly reshape today’s Europe while imposing a new international order.”
