Azerbaijan’s Aliyev reaffirms support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, warns ceasefire alone won’t end war

BAKU – Azerbaijan has consistently supported Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and will continue to do so, President Ilham Aliyev said on April 10 at the international forum “On the way to the new world order” in the nation’s capital.

He underscored that Baku “has supported, supports, and will continue to support” Ukraine.

“As a country that has experienced occupation and the violation of its own territorial integrity, we fully understand this situation,” Aliyev added.

While expressing hope for a swift resolution to end to the war, Aliyev stressed that a ceasefire on its own isn’t a durable solution.

“But the key question is how to achieve that – and whether any potential or temporary ceasefire would be truly sustainable,” he said.

Drawing parallels to Azerbaijan’s decades long conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, noted that true resolution only came through decisive outcomes, not short-term or temporary agreements.

He also voiced skepticism about the current prospects for a peaceful settlement between Ukraine and Russia.

Any ceasefire is “just a temporary relief, giving countries time to regroup, mobilize, and start [hostilies] again,” he said.

“Russia has declared the occupied territories part of its own. How could it now reverse that? Ukraine, like the rest of the world – and Azerbaijan – considers those territories part of Ukraine. How could Ukraine simply give them up and say, ‘No, they’re not part of our country’?” he rhetorically asked.

“Wars end when a final act of capitulation is signed,” Aliyev said.
