Australia was the largest contributor to Ukraine outside of NATO during the first months of the Russian full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov says.
In particular, Bushmaster armored vehicles have shown extraordinary effectiveness in actual combat operations. However, in an address to the Australians, Reznikov added: “Our fight for global freedom is not over yet, and we still need your support.”
The minister called on Sydney to join the international tank coalition for the Armed Forces – an informal association of states that provide combat vehicles to Ukraine. Ukraine “would be honored to receive the Australian Hawkies [armored personnel carriers],” which are necessary for a counteroffensive, Reznikov specified.
At the end of April, #FreeTheHawkei rallies organized by Ukrainian communities took place in Australia. Activists called on the country’s government to continue supporting Ukraine and supply Hawkei to the needs of the Armed Forces.
The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organizations (AFUO) thanks Sydney for the newly introduced sanctions against Russia but also emphasizes the need for additional military assistance.
“It’s time for the Government to urgently review how it can step up and ensure the steady, consistent military support Ukraine needs to be able to defend itself and our common values. This is not the time to succumb to war fatigue. It is imperative for global security, peace and justice,” said AFUO Co-Chairs, Stefan Romaniw and Kateryna Argyrou.
