On July 16, the Association of Ukrainians in Portugal organized Ukrainian Borscht Day, a festival to jog Europeans’ memory that the war in Ukraine is still going on and support Lviv’s First City Clinical Hospital. The event was supported by the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, the Embassy of Ukraine in Portugal, and São Domingos de Benfica district administrations.
To the accompaniment of Ukrainian patriotic songs, performed on the stage, Ukrainian Lisboners treated the festival guests with traditional Ukrainian dishes. Seventy liters of borscht, which was the “king” of the table, were willingly consumed by both Ukrainians and Friends of Ukraine. A fair was also set up offering vyshyvankas, items with Ukrainian symbols, and a variety of delicacies.
AUP thanks all those who visited the festival and separately the team that had worked hard to make it happen despite the scorching heat, including the cooks, artists, florist, and photographers.
The Association of Ukrainians in Portugal (AUP) was established in 2003 to protect the rights and interests of Ukrainian immigrants and their descendants residing or staying in Portugal. It is a member of the UWC, ECU, UWCC, and Portuguese High Commission for Immigration and Intercultural Dialogue (ACIDI). AUP has opened 14 branches and eight Ukrainian Saturday schools across all of the territory of Portugal, including Madeira.
