Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) board member Kateryna Argyrou met with officials from various ministries, military bodies, and non-profit groups during a November visit to Ukraine that included meetings with frontline brigades.
Her mission as co-chair of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) was to evaluate the country’s current needs and challenges.
In Kyiv, Argyrou met with officials from the Defense Ministry, the National Guard of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kyiv City State Administration, and the Kyiv Institute of Rehabilitation.
She also engaged with representatives from Razom for Ukraine – one of the most effective war-time organizations, as well as Global Atlas Aid.
Kateryna visited the 80th Airborne Assault Brigade, renowned for its use of the well-regarded Australian Bushmaster infantry mobility vehicle. Soldiers from the unit welcomed her with an exclusive tour and recorded a heartfelt message of gratitude for the people of Australia.
Argyrou’s visit also took her to Sumy in northeastern Ukraine, where she witnessed firsthand the resilience of local civilians.
“Exhausted civilians have reluctantly adapted to such living conditions; they hesitate to find shelter until they know what kind of missile is headed for their region, potentially their local street,” she said. “Shahed drones flying overhead are a regular occurrence – inflicting stress and terror on regular families for more than 1,000 days, who are just trying to get by and provide for their loved ones”
She emphasized that Ukraine’s need for assistance is greater than ever, and the West has many opportunities to step in.
“Defenders and civilians are tired, exhausted from the daily grind of Russian terror and the threat of missile strikes. But they are determined, they remain united and committed to Ukraine’s territorial integrity, democracy, and freedom,” Argyrou underscored.
She had previously visited Ukraine in June. At that time, the (UWC) spoke with her about the motivation behind supporting Ukraine from abroad and how the Ukrainian diaspora can help combat “war fatigue.”
