German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock supported giving Ukraine candidate status for accession to the European Union, according to Bloomberg. “This is a historic moment. We cannot close the door to Ukraine,” Ms Burbock said. She noted that the European Commission will make a final decision on Ukraine’s candidate status in June, “but we Germans have a special responsibility at the moment.”
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Italy Mario Draghi said that almost all major member states of the European Union are currently opposed to granting Ukraine candidate status. The Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte also hinted that in the coming months, Ukraine may not receive candidate status.
