UWC mourns passing of philanthropist Eugene Melnyk

The Ukrainian World Congress expresses deep sorrow over the untimely passing on March 28, 2022, of Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist Eugene Melnyk.

Eugene Melnyk was the founder and former chairman of Biovail Corp, once the largest pharmaceutical company in Canada. More recently, he was chairman and chief executive of the medical device company Neurolign. His passions included horse breeding and hockey. Eugene Melnyk was the owner, governor and chairman of the National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators. He was also an Honorary Colonel of the Canadian Armed Forces.

A son of Ukrainian immigrants, Eugene Melnyk supported many causes including St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto. However, one cause very dear to his heart was the Ukrainian charity Help us Help.

“Eugene Melnyk was a true supporter of Ukraine and its people, and his love for the children of Ukraine was heartwarming. He believed in their future and over decades he dedicated countless hours and contributed significant funds to help Ukrainian children fulfill their dreams,” stated UWC President Paul Grod. “May his legacy of goodness inspire new generations as Ukrainians work to rebuild their lives shattered by war.”

Memory eternal!
