EXECUTIVE SESSION SET

A session of the UWC Executive has been scheduled for Saturday, June 4, 2005, 9:30 AM in Toronto. The traditional agenda of reports has been jettisoned for this session with pressing items the order of the day.

MAY UWC FUNDRAISING

Traditionally, the month is May is reserved for fundraising on behalf of the Ukrainian World Congress. We have issued a bilingual appeal on this subject and transmitted it to Ukrainian publications and our member organizations. We ask that our member organizations devote much effort to this as May fundraising essentially is the only source of income for the UWC’s global activity. A copy of the bi-lingual appeal is included herein.

UWC ISSUES STATEMENT ON SPECIOUS VICTORY DAY

On May 9th, 2005 many will observe the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. Preparations are being made in Moscow and Kyiv. The President of Ukraine has suggested that he would be traveling during this time, perhaps a day before, to Moscow to share in the celebrations there. The President of the United States has scheduled a visit to Moscow specifically for May 9, 2005. In connection with these preparations, the UWC has issued a statement widely circulated within the media and our membership. The UWC’s statement concludes with our own suggestions for an appropriate marking of this anniversary:

“We urge our membership to commemorate the tragic aftermath of World War II on May 9th, 2005 through requiem observances, liturgies and, wakes to remember those, who fought in different uniforms but with independent Ukraine in their hearts. Similarly, we call upon our member organizations to educate their governments about Soviet repressions and communist evils. Finally, we urge the President of Ukraine to cancel his trip to Moscow as Moscow symbolizes the tragedy of the Ukrainian people, their pain and suffering for 45 years following the specious victory of May 9th.”

IN MEMORIAM

On Saturday, April 3, 2005, Pope John Paul II passed away. In connection with his passing the UWC issued a bi-lingual statement. An excerpt from the statement reads as follows:

“The Holy Father’s visit to Ukraine in 2001 will not only be remembered by the Ukrainian people as a high honor bestowed upon the Ukrainian Catholic Church but will be recorded in history as a reaffirmation of our spirituality as followers of Christ. Equally meaningful was the beatification of twenty nine martyrs from the Ukrainian Church accomplished by the Holy Father during his visit. We sincerely hope that the Holy Father’s good faith effort to formally recognize the Ukrainian Catholic Patriarchate will be completed shortly by his successor.

We bow our head in deep respect of this truly great and wonderful man who touched all our lives. At this time we call upon the Ukrainian people worldwide to lend their prayers for the repose of the Holy Father’s soul and for the completion of his vision. Through the Ukrainian Catholic Church and its Patriarch Lubomyr we offer our condolences to the more than one billion Catholics and all our brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the world.”

MAY – UKRAINIAN WORLD CONGRESS MONTH

               SUPPORT THE GLOBAL UKRAINIAN COMMUNITY

The organized Ukrainian Diaspora played a significant role during the Orange Revolution. A record number of Ukrainian citizens in the Diaspora participated in the elections. Over 2,600 Ukrainians, citizens of their own countries, served as international election observers at various polling stations throughout the world. The refrain at Independence Square in Kyiv "Together We Are Many, We Will Not Be Defeated!" is profoundly symbolic for the global Ukrainian community. Considering the demographic factor that one in three Ukrainians lives outside Ukraine (numbering some twenty million), this symbolism becomes an even more significant unifying factor: twenty million Ukrainians in the Diaspora are an integral part of the Ukrainian nation.

A revolutionary process strengthens its participants and, today, the Ukrainian nation serves as an example for others an example of unity, courage and dedication to values of justice and democracy. The realization of these principles, the further development of a national-spiritual self-awareness and economic well being, is a task, which faces both, the Ukrainian nation in Ukraine and in the Diaspora.

The further development and well being of the Diaspora is no less important than the development of the nation in our ancestral homeland. This is the direction in which the new President and government of Ukraine will be working. However, their priority is safeguarding the well being of the people in Ukraine. Therefore, the community structures in the Diaspora not only continue to fulfill the role of ambassadors of Ukraine that are involved in promoting Ukrainian causes in countries where Ukrainians reside, but also are the principal source for defending the rights of Ukrainians residing abroad.

The work of the Ukrainian World Congress is well known to most Ukrainians. In the past these efforts resulted in various degrees of success. However, contemporary conditions compel maximum effort. Today Ukraine is a player in world politics, artificial political borders have dissipated and electronic communication has enabled a new interaction and closer ties for bringing to the fore a new concept – a global Ukrainianism. Today, Ukrainians in the West have the wherewithal and ability to help their less fortunate brothers and sisters, i.e. broadening the network of communication among Ukrainians, who find themselves in eleven different time zones in the Russian Federation, assisting the development of a Ukrainian school system in the Trans-Dnister region of Moldova, or establishing a monument to Ukrainian victims of Soviet repression on the territory of Karelia in the Russian Federation. The full development of a global Ukrainian community is the implementation of the sense of the refrain on Independence Square:

"Together We Are Many, We Will Not Be Defeated!"

The month of May is the month for donating to the Ukrainian World Congress. We appeal to you – join in building a global Ukrainian community! Help in the realization of the tasks that the UWC has pledged to fulfill. Open your hearts and your financial capabilities and assist the UWC in manifesting to all Ukrainians in the Diaspora that they are a part of our global Ukrainian family. Please send your donations to: 145 Evans Ave., #207, Toronto, Ontario M8Z 5X8, Canada or: 225 East 11th Street, New York, NY, 10003, USA. For tax deductible donations in Canada please make your check out to Ukrainian World Foundation and in the USA to Ukrainian Congress Committee of America or Ukrainian American Coordinating Council. In other countries you also can make donations through your national central representation. We sincerely thank you for your generosity and support.
