Ukrainian World Congress needs your support: UWC May Appeal 2014

The world is witnessing an unprecedented in modern day history invasion of an independent state by a foreign occupier. The players are known. The common goal for Ukrainians worldwide is a sovereign, independent, democratic Ukrainian state, where fundamental human rights are respected and inherent European values are espoused, and where the Ukrainian people can live in dignity.

The role of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) with its member organizations is to ensure that the international community takes concrete and effective measures to assist Ukraine, at a time when not only Ukraine’s security, but world security is at risk.

Ukrainian World Congress urges United Nations to suspend Russia’s membership and send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine

On 19 March 2014 Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij issued a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, and the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, John W. Ashe, in which he urged the United Nations to suspend Russia’s membership rights and privileges in the UN and to send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine to protect it from any further invasion by Russian troops.

Referring to the unprecedented in the 21st century invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces, and the forceful and illegal “annexation” of Crimea to Russia, the UWC President focused on the blatant violation of not only peace in the region, but the threat to security and stability throughout the world.

Recognizing the purpose of the United Nations to “maintain international peace and security”, Eugene Czolij urged the United Nations to urgently take effective collective measures.

UWC President appears before the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development of the House of Commons of Canada

On 3 March 2014 Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij appeared before the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development of the House of Commons of Canada.

Eugene Czolij expressed gratitude to the Government of Canada for its unequivocal support of the citizens of Ukraine and urged Canada to actively support the new government in Ukraine in its daunting challenge of implementing the necessary reforms to reestablish Ukraine as a fully democratic, modern European state.

“Should the international community not act decisively in respect of Russia’s invasion of the Crimea, Russia will be emboldened – as was Nazi Germany following the Munich Agreement – to continue to fuel its imperialistic ambitions under the guise of protecting “the lives of citizens of the Russian Federation” with possible expansion into Eastern Ukraine and eventually other parts of Europe,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.

UWC calls for Ukraine’s governing authorities to stop shooting their own people

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) demands that the governing authorities of Ukraine immediately cease the brutal attacks on protesters in Kyiv that have resulted in deaths and numerous injuries, and are still continuing on the city’s streets.
The UWC is deeply troubled by these actions by Ukraine’s governing authorities which today, instead of resolving the crisis, have undertaken the ruthless destruction of EuroMaidan.
“The Ukrainian World Congress calls upon the international community to take concrete measures without delay to stop the killing and bloodshed in Ukraine,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij. “The Ukrainian World Congress expresses condolences to the families of the victims of today’s senseless violence.”

UWC calls on Ukraine’s governing authorities to prevent Soviet-type pacification in the Crimea

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) strongly condemns the anti-Ukrainian initiatives of Deputies of the Crimean Parliament to turn to the Russian Federation for “protection” of the Crimea, which were made during the session of 4 February 2014.
According to Deputy Sergei Tsekov: “We simply are obliged to turn to the Russian Federation, given that the Crimea – is a Russian autonomy, Russian by nationality, by culture and language ... our protector can only be the Russian Federation.
“The Ukrainian World Congress appeals to the governing authorities of Ukraine to put an end to such initiatives towards Soviet-type pacification of the Crimea, which are a direct threat to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.

Ukrainian World Congress strongly condemns Russia’s continued encroachment on the territory of Ukraine

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) strongly condemns the statement made by Sergei Glazyev, an advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who, in an interview with the publication Kommersant‑Ukraine on 6 February 2014, threatened Russian intervention to supposedly guarantee the security of Ukraine, which is reminiscent of the Soviet methods of pacifism.
In addition, the advisor to the Russian president is attempting to create a divide between Eastern and Western Ukraine with the unfounded assertion that “ties between the oblasts of Western and Eastern Ukraine are not as strong as the ties between Southeastern Ukraine and Russia.”

The UWC is outraged by such threats to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

UWC condemns the decision by Ukraine’s governing authorities to suspend the signing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) condemns today’s decision by Ukraine’s governing authorities to suspend the process leading to the signing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and to renew an active dialogue with the Russian Federation and other countries of the Customs Union.

This decision contravenes the Law of Ukraine “On the principles of foreign and domestic policies” and the aspirations of the Ukrainian people for European integration.

“The decision by Ukraine’s governing authorities to suspend the signing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement on the eve of the Third Summit of the Eastern Partnership in Vilnius on 28-29 November 2013 and to step up their dialogue with Russia and other countries of the Customs Union, undermines the national interests of Ukraine and threatens a revival of the Soviet Union. Ukraine’s governing authorities will have to answer to the entire Ukrainian nation for this,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.

Ukrainian World Congress urges EU leaders to support the signing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. Ukrainian communities in 40 countries join appeal

On 4 November 2013, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), together with Ukrainian communities in 40 countries, urged the leaders of the European Union (EU) to support the signing of  the  EU‑Ukraine Association Agreement during the Third Summit of the Eastern Partnership scheduled for 28-29 November 2013 in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The letter, signed by UWC President Eugene Czolij and UWC member organizations Presidents, highlights that this summit will be a defining historical moment in Europe's relations with the Eastern partner countries and the ultimate test of the Eastern Partnership policy of the EU, notably because the EU‑Ukraine Association Agreement is slated to be signed at this event.

This agreement offers a unique opportunity to achieve the European integration of Ukraine’s intellectual capital, industries, market and natural resources.
