The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) urges UNESCO to condemn human rights violations in the illegally occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea (Ukraine) by the Russian Federation and, adhering with UNESCO’s mandate, to continue monitoring fundamental human rights and freedoms in Crimea in the areas of education, science, culture, communication and information in accordance with the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In Memoriam – Pavlo Dorozhynsky (1925-2015)

The Ukrainian World Congress deeply mourns the passing on 18 March 2015 of political and community activist Pavlo Dorozhynsky – former long-term member of the Ukrainian World Congress Secretariat.
The passing of Pavlo Dorozhynsky is a great loss for both the Ukrainian diaspora and Ukraine, to which he dedicated his life. The late Pavlo Dorozhynsky actively defended the ideals of a free, independent and democratic Ukrainian state.

Joint Statement of the Ukrainian World Congress, The World Congress of the Crimean Tatars and the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities of Ukraine on the first anniversary of the forceful annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation
 
One year ago, on 18 March 2014, the international community was witness to the most insolent since the Second World War violation of international law – the forceful annexation by the Russian Federation of Crimea, an integral part of the territory of the Ukrainian state.
 
The United Nations, in the resolution Territorial integrity of Ukraine adopted by the General Assembly on 27 March 2014 on the illegal so-called “referendum” in Crimea held on 16 March 2014, declared:

First goal of the Ukrainian World Congress initiative Patriot Defence was met: Defenders of Ukraine receive 10,000 Improved First Aid Kits
 
In February 2015 the first goal of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) humanitarian initiative Patriot Defence was met with the distribution of 10,000 Improved First Aid Kits (IFAK) to Ukrainian soldiers.
 
The goal of the UWC humanitarian initiative Patriot Defence, led since its inception in May 2014 by UWC Director of Humanitarian Initiatives Dr. Ulana Suprun,  is to save the lives of defenders of Ukraine in combat by providing instruction in tactical medicine in accordance with NATO-standard Combat Lifesaver training and supplying an IFAK.

Ukrainians worldwide mourn with people of Ukraine
 
Ukrainians around the world mourn with the people of Ukraine in the aftermath of the tragic accident on 4 March 2015 at the Zasyadko coal mine in Donetsk that took the lives of at least 32 miners.
 
“On this Day of Mourning, the Ukrainian World Congress expresses condolences to the families of the victims and the injured, and joins the people of Ukraine in their sorrow,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) supports the call of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations to support Nadiya Savchenko, Ukrainian Member of Parliament and delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, with a one-day hunger strike on 8 March 2015 – International Women’s Day.

Ukrainian World Congress condemns murder of Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC)
condemns the killing of well-known Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov who was murdered in the center of Moscow on 27 February 2015.
Boris Nemtsov was one of the few Russian politicians who openly supported Ukraine’s EuroMaidan, raised the illegality of the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation, condemned President Vladimir Putin’s military aggression in Eastern Ukraine and campaigned for the release of Nadiya Savchenko, Ukraine’s Member of Parliament, illegally imprisoned by Russian governing authorities.

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) calls upon the international community to publicly demonstrate support on 1 March 2015 for Nadiya Savchenko, Member of Ukraine’s Parliament and Delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, who was illegally imprisoned by the governing authorities of the Russian Federation.
 
On 25 February 2015 a Russian court upheld the decision to extend the detention of Nadiya Savchenko to 13 May 2015.

Ukrainian World Congress calls for urgent measures to enforce Minsk agreements
 
The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) strongly supports the governing authorities of Ukraine in calling for the international community to  prevent further violations by Russia and its proxies of the Minsk agreements.

Despite the Minsk agreements, Russia and its proxies continue their offensive in Eastern Ukraine as evidenced by the continued shelling in the areas of ​​Debaltseve and Donetsk. In addition, the Russia-led militants blocked the OSCE mission to monitor the situation.

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) draws the attention of the international community to the increasing number of deaths among children as a result of the barbaric terrorist acts in Eastern Ukraine that, in violation of the Minsk agreements, continue to be committed by Russia-backed terrorists and Russian special forces.

On 11 February 2015 the leadership of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) led by its President Eugene Czolij met with Chairperson of the Parliament of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman, Minister of Health of Ukraine Alexander Kvitashvili, Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine Pavlo Rozenko, and Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov.
 
The main focus was on effective means for the Ukrainian diaspora to assist Ukraine with strategic issues related to the defence of the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

UWC leadership met with government officials, Members of Parliament and religious leaders in Ukraine and the Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine

On 10 February 2015 in Kyiv, Ukraine, the leadership of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) held a series of meetings with government officials, Members of Parliament, religious leaders and community activists in Ukraine, and the Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine to strengthen cooperation in the defence of the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine with the escalation of armed aggression by the Russian Federation and terrorist activities of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics. The UWC President Eugene Czolij also introduced the newly appointed Director of the UWC Mission to Ukraine Serhiy Kasyanchuk.

On 10 February 2015 in Kyiv, Ukraine, Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij met the Vice President of the World Jewish Congress, Josef Zissels, and the President of the World Congress of Crimean Tatars, Refat Chubarov, to discuss the concept of the “Coalition for democratic choice” and future cooperation in support of peoples that have chosen the democratic path of development.
